Types of grave

Lawn graves

All new graves are in the lawn section. These graves, allowing a period of time for the ground to settle, are grass seeded following an interment. The area is then maintained as lawn, enclosures and planting on this space is not permitted. At Little Trees cemetery memorials are fixed on the concrete bearer at the head of the grave. At Snell Hatch cemetery there is space at the head end of the grave to erect a memorial. Lawn graves can accommodate two full coffined burials and four sets of cremated remains.

Cremated remains areas

There is a designated area, at both cemeteries, for the burial of cremated remains. Each cremation plot can accommodate four sets of ashes. At Snell Hatch, concrete kerbing allows for two 6”x 4” plaques plus a small memorial. At Little Trees cemetery memorials are fixed on the concrete bearer at the head of the plot. The grave space is grass seeded over following an interment and maintained as lawn.

Muslim graves

There is a designated section at both cemeteries for burial of people of the Muslim faith. The designated section at Snell Hatch is now full, therefore all burials take place at Little Trees cemetery. Graves in this section accommodate one full burial.

Book of Remembrance

The book of Remembrance is displayed in a protective case within Snell Hatch cemetery. The book is made up of four quarterly volumes and is handmade throughout. It consists of leaves of sheepskin vellum and bound in natural calf vellum tooled in gold. Lettering by highly skilled craftsmen provides a medieval-like permanent record.

Two pages are allotted to each day of the year. The book is open at the page for the day so the entry may be seen on each anniversary.

Relatives and friends may have entries inscribed in the book of Remembrance on the date of death, birth or wedding anniversary of the deceased. An ordinary entry consists of two lines, one for the name and a short epitaph if desired. Should a longer inscription be desired, a five or eight line entry may be made. A crest, emblem, flower or simple design may be part of a five or eight line inscription.

Fees and registers

See our fees and charges directory for a full price list. All original burial registers are kept at the Town Hall and may be inspected by appointment.
