We are continually working to improve the experience of using this website. We want to ensure crawley.gov.uk is easy to use and accessible for everyone.

How accessible this website is

Parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • some tables do not have row headings
  • some heading elements are not consistent
  • some images do not have image descriptions
  • some buttons are not correctly identified
  • some error messages are not clearly associated with form controls
  • many older documents are in PDF format and are not accessible or have poor colour contrast
  • online services provided on our behalf by third parties may not be fully accessible, we are working with all partners to ensure these sites are made accessible

What we are doing to improve accessibility

We are urgently fixing content which fails to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, to meet AAA where possible.

  • we are reducing the number of documents on this website, replacing them with HTML content where possible.  Older pdf files will be replaced with accessible versions, or removed
  • we are updating all headings to ensure they are in the correct order
  • training for staff on how to create accessible pages and documents

  1. some content looks like headings but is not. This makes it difficult for screen reader users to navigate the page. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships). This will be fixed by 30 September 2022.
  2. images on some pages do not always have suitable image descriptions. Users of assistive technologies may not have access to information conveyed in images. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (Non-text Content) and will be fixed by 30 September 2022.
  3. some pages have duplicate titles. This may make it difficult for users to orient themselves and find the right content. This fails WCAG 2.4.2 success criterion (Page Titled) and will be fixed by 30 September 2022.
  4. some pages cannot be found through more than one type of navigation. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.5 (Multiple Ways) and will be fixed by 30 September 2022.
  5. some error messages in web forms are not clearly associated with form controls. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 3.3.3 Error Suggestion (Level AA) and will be fixed by 30 September 2022.
  6. many documents are in less accessible formats, for example PDF. Non-HTML documents published on or after 23 September 2018 must have an accessible format. This will be fixed by 30 September 2022.
  7. the logo image has poor contrast on focus. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum) and will be fixed by 17 March 2022.
  8. some tables do not have table row headers when needed. This means assistive technologies will not read the tables correctly. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships) and will be fixed by 31 August 2022.
