Revenues privacy notice

The following privacy notice applies to Revenues (Council Tax and Non Domestic Rates).

This notice explains how personal information is going to be used, what it is used for, who it might be shared with and why and for how long it is to be kept.

What information is collected?

  • Contact details (including telephone numbers and email address)
  • Direct debit bank account details
  • Employer details 
  • Financial information (income and expenditure)
  • Legal interest in property

Why do we collect your personal information?

  • Deliver services and support to you
  • Manage those services we provide to you
  • Train and manage the employment of our workers who deliver those services
  • Help investigate any worries or complaints you have about your services
  • Keep track of spending on services
  • Check the quality of services
  • Prevent and detect fraud in the use of public funds

Data Controller

ºù«ÍÞapp Borough Council (CBC) is registered as a Data Controller with The Information Commissioner’s Office (Registration Number Z5327706).

The council complies with The Data Protection Act 2018 and the GDPR.

We ensure that your personal data is processed fairly, kept safe and secure and retained for no longer than is necessary.

The legal basis for processing personal data

  • Processing is necessary for compliance with a legal obligation
  • Processing is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest or in the exercise of official authority vested in the controller

Who we share data with

We pass data to:

  • Internal departments
  • Other local authorities (for purposes of collection of council tax)
  • Central Government
  • Other third-party organisations, as allowed by law
  • Other partner agencies that provide services on our behalf
  • Agencies with whom we have a duty to co-operate, such as the police
  • Department for Works & Pensions
  • HM Court Services
  • Enforcement agencies contracted to perform collection duties on the council’s behalf

We will not share data with third-parties for marketing purposes

Fair Processing Notice

Any information we hold about you in the Council Tax records will be used for the billing, collection and recovery of Council Tax and to enable the council to carry out and perform its statutory duties.

 The council is under a duty to protect funds it administers. To do this it may also share the information with other bodies responsible for auditing or administrating public funds for the prevention and detection of crime. It may also share information provided to it amongst its own departments to improve working practices and the delivery of services for which they are responsible. By sharing this information between council departments (on a strictly controlled and regulated basis), the council intends to allow re-use of information from its Council Tax database. This will include checking proof of residence for debt recovery purposes. The information may also be matched to other data held by the council to prevent and detect erroneous claims.

Retention periods

Council Tax commenced on 1st April 1993 and in some circumstances the amount of Council Tax payable can be reduced from this date. In order therefore that we are able to correctly adjust and refund any money that is due, records are retained from this date.

Non Domestic Rates came into effect on 1 April 1990, and in some circumstances the amount of rates payable can be reduced from this date. In order therefore that we are able to correctly adjust and refund any money that is due, records are retained from this date.

Rights

You have the right to:

  • Be informed of data processing (which is covered by this privacy notice).
  • Access your personal information (known as a Subject Access Request).
  • Have inaccuracies corrected.
  • Have information erased.
  • Restrict processing.
  • Data portability.
  • Intervention in respect of automated decision making/profiling.
  • Withdraw Consent (see below)
  • Complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (see below)

Withdrawal of consent

The lawful basis upon which CBC process personal data is set out in this notice.  However, where personal data is solely processed on the basis of consent, you will have the right to withdraw that consent.
